Organize matters into departments

Group your matters by department - Employment, Commercial, Compliance - and find any department's work in one click.

A department groups matters the way your legal team actually works - Employment, Commercial, Compliance. Each department gathers its matters in one place, gives new matters a sensible starting team and visibility, and sits one click away on the matter list and in your sidebar.

Departments are off until you turn them on

An owner or admin opens Organization Settings → Matter Types and switches on Department. Nothing changes for your existing matters until you file them in a department. Not an admin? Ask one of your organization's admins to turn it on.

A lawyer files a new matter in the Employment department, which starts it with the department's team and private visibility; on the matter list, the Department filter then shows only Employment's matters.

How it works

  1. 1

    Turn departments on

Departments are off until an owner or admin turns them on: open Organization Settings → Matter Types and switch on Department.

  2. 2

    Create a department

Create a matter with the type Department. Add the people who work in it as its team, and choose a default visibility for new matters. A department is a matter in its own right, so it can also hold the department's policies, notes and chats.

  3. 3

    File matters in it

Open the department and choose New Matter - the new matter starts with the department's team, which you can adjust in the Team step, and the department's default visibility, which you can change afterwards with Edit Matter. To file an existing matter, open it and choose Move to Department from its menu.

  4. 4

    Find a department's work

On the matter list, each matter shows its department, and the Department filter narrows the list to one department - or to matters in none. Pin your departments to the sidebar to get there in one click.

A department is

  • Visible to everyone in your organization, so anyone can find it
  • A starting point for new matters: their team and visibility
  • A place for the department's own documents, notes and chats

A department isn't

  • A way to share matters - each matter keeps its own team and visibility, and moving one into a department changes nobody's access
  • A window into private matters - you see only the matters you can open
  • Nested - departments sit at the top level, one per matter

Keep departments in your sidebar

An admin can pin all departments to everyone's sidebar, and anyone can pin the ones they use most.
